Hi everyone- same question from my side and also it will be great if someone could also let me know how TRIZ is diff from 6sigma.

You are in the right place.   The TRIZ Journal has had a series of case studies and tutorials for almost 11 years, and has had 2 complete textbooks published free, on-line.    So, start with the article “what is TRIZ?” on the panel to the left of this column.   Then, for any TRIZ topic you are interested in, use The TRIZ Journal search to find articles.     Search on “tutorial” to find the articles that are specifically intended to teach.    The serial textbooks are Kraev's Korner which started in October 2006 (lesson 10 is in the current issue) and Larry Ball's “Hierarchical Algorithms of TRIZ” which ran from May 2005 through April 2006.  In both cases, you'll get the most value from doing all the exercises–don't just say “uh-hunh” and read on.

Another memeber suggested joining the Altshuller Institute–their annual convention has classes, technical papers, and a lot of discussion among the participants.  I'll generalize that to say join your local TRIZ association–Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, Korea, France, Germany, Republic of China, etc., all have TRIZ associations that can help you find a consultant, buy books, etc.  The European TRIZ Association http://www.etria.net has its major conference in the fall, and it has been the best conference of the year each year for the last several.  It is in Frankfurt in November.

So, how to start?   Read The TRIZ Journal, read books, got to conferences, take classes…..(See The TRIZ Journal Calendar section for dates of conferences and classes.)

Finally, APPLY it.   Try each technique as you learn it, and then try combinations.  You'll get better fast if you onstantly practice the method.

Diffrence with Six Sigma. One way to look at it is:

Six sigma is a methodology to improve processes, most often involving a creative or problem-solving step to make a change for the better (admit this is a very simplistic view).

TRIZ is a good set of tools to solve a problem, so could be part of your Six Sigma project during the Improve phase (Six Sigma is DMA-I-C).

My experience suggests that you should first do some reading. I suggest Altshuller's book, “And Suddenly the Inventor Appeared” and then Darell Mann's “Hands On Systematic Innovation”. Additional readings would be Rantanen and Domb's book “Simplified TRIZ” and the Altshuller Institutes's revised version of the 40 Principles. Then are numerous workshops. I think it's important to attend a “pure” TRIZ workshop prior to one combining TRIZ with Six Sigma, DFSS, etc. so the TRIZ content doesn't get overly diluted. Whatever you do, don't start with software–get the brain part down first and then it might be useful. After you get going, try to understand the entire ARIZ algorithm, though it is not necessary for all situations.

Where to start better also depends on, where do you want to go.

I agree with suggestions on journal, books and introduction seminar in general. BUT for business people, especially in leading positions I would recommend to start with TRIZ Six Sigma training, or even with Six Sigma (if no background yet).

E.g., I have just get an inquiry from an “Engineering Director” of rather big company, who was wondering how to apply “contradiction matrix ” to improve his business efficiency, particularly in terms of costs etc. Apparently, just TRIZ seminar or TRIZ books were somehow not the right place to start with, as it did not help to clarify how to come closer to the initial objective – business case.

In such case TRIZ Six Sigma (even Green Belt course) will help a lot

What is meant by “business efficiency”? Is this a technical issue or a management and organizational one? Does it have to do with speed of technical problem solving or how projects are selected? People are hired? Priorities are set? People are evaluated? If so, the traditional contradiction table is not the correct tool and the engineering manager you are referring to has a very limited knowledge of TRIZ. The contradiction table is an old, but useful tool, and it's only a part of the overall algorithm and tool kit. It seems to me that the broader algorithm questions of Ideal Final Result, resource identification and use, and separation principles used for business and organizational problems are far more useful. Publications (some in The TRIZ Journal) are readily available.

If “business efficiency” relates to organizational and people issues, TRIZ may not be the right tool kit at all. Possibly some of the organizational and psychological assessment tools are more appropriate.

If “business efficiency” actually refers to how fast technical problems are solved, then the contradiction table might be a PART of improving this, but it's going to be very project specific.

Right, there are much more tools than just Contradiction Matrix in TRIZ Modethodolgy and Tool-Set, but many newcomers searching of “how to start” to my experience associate  TRIZ first of all with the Contradiction Matrix.

Now about Problem Statement, which is of major importance to have a right solution.

Many articles and books and software tools on TRIZ present it in application to the efficient and innovative solving of Technical Problems, or Organizational problems.

As soon as we understand any subject containing the Problem as a System with its Functions and Processes, on an abstract level there is no difference wether it is just technical system, or organisational, or human -machine, or social etc. And therefore Methodology, TRIZ Principles and Standards etc. are equally applicable to diverse systems. Similar as we are teaching Systems Engineering, or Knowledge Engineering, or Process Modelling and Simulation, or Six Sigma in application for manufacturing, or transactional, or service/financial etc. compalex systems and related products and business processes.

There are certainly different customizations of TRIZ software tools and their knowledge bases, e.g. Innovation Workbench (Ideation Internation Inc.,) is more applicable for technical applications, and Knowledge Wizard software (also Ideation International Inc) – for business /organizational etc. problem solving.

Now, what is an added value of TRIZ Six Sigma combination.

Six Sigma is a data driven approach, methodology and set of analytical, statistical, modelling etc. tools  to efficient solving of the business problems and to managing relevant projects.

Efficiency in business sense is described and quantified in six sigma by business and financial metrics and Six Sigma Projects are aimed from the very start to achieve not only technical objectives in a shortest time, but also to justify (with data) that solution provides significant and sustainable business and financial benefit, as well as desired system capability to meet customers (external and/or internal) requirements.

In business applications, even one manages to find innovative and elegant solution to a problem, there is always need to justify with data it's efficiency in the above mentioned sense. TRIZ does not provide this knowledge and tools, which are particularly unified and systemtised in Six Sigma.

Usually to understand the problem we have first to perform initial measurements and analysis. Again, TRIZ tools are useful, but not sufficient to perform those tasks, which again are covered by Six Sigma,

TRIZ Six Sigma, at least how I am teaching it since last 6 years, integrates TRIZ methodology into the Six Sigma framework, starting from the very first Define (the Problem) or Identify (Requirements) Phase, to the last ones (Imrpove or Design, and then Control the efficiency or Verify the Design Solution /Concept)
