Most general discussions on TRIZ focus on manufacturing environment. Is there a good reference on application of TRIZ to healthcare/services/transactional environment?

The TRIZ Journal has a lot of articles on TRIZ for non-engineering, non-manufacturing situations. A few examples: TRIZ for learning English, Nov. 2006; TRIZ for advertising, July 2006; TRIZ at Bradford University (Organizational problem) and TRIZ in Financial services Six Sigma–both in April 2006; TRIZ in Business Process Management and TRIZ for cost reduction–both in January 2006. The 40 principles for problem solving were applied to public health in the SARS epidemic, June 2003. Go to The TRIZ Journal https://the-trizjournal.com, click “archive” and the date to get to the article of interest.

I think one of the interesting challenges in using the contradiction table in non-technical problem solving is the interpretation of the parameters and principles from their original technical setting to a business or non-technical setting.  This makes for an interesting group discussion all in itself. What does “shape” mean? Management organizational structure? What does “weight” mean? Number of people on staff? Capital already invested? Can “dynamism” refer to organizational flexibility?  Can “asymmetry” mean different types of organizations in different parts of the world? Though it's a stretch in some cases, you can almost always make a connection.

The separation principles, on the other hand, can always be applied to business and organizational problem solving. Take any business contradiction issue and just walk through the 3-6 (depending upon who is counting) principles (separation in time, space, etc.) and new concepts will quickly come forth.  Publications in this area as well are available.

Hope this helps!

I am doing a once a month series for the Altshuller Institute on the use of TRIZ in organizational problem solving.  Articles 1-3 have been completed and article 4 (of 12) will appear shortly.  Go to http://www.aitriz.org and on the far left of the tool bar you will see the TRIZ heading. Open up and you will see a subheading called “The Soft Side of TRIZ”. That's where the columns are.  Welcome any comments or input.
