Does anyone know if there is any record of the data Altshuller used to create the contradiction table? There's a lot of trust put into the validity of the contradiction table without any proof (that I can find) of the data used to populate it.

You might want to try the Altshuller Institute for TRIZ Studies, http://www.aitriz.org Several of their officers were Altshuller's students. Another possible resource is the Altshuller Family Foundation website http://www.altshuller.ru (about 15% of the site is in English.)
For the more recent versions of the matrix, Darrell Mann included an extensive introduction in his books Matrix 2003 and Matrix 2010 that explain the research method that was used.
