Needs for TRIZ Research?

There is a lot of people interested in doing business with and around TRIZ, but what about the needs for TRIZ research? In which way may evolve this methodology? Is there any recent trend? Who cares?

I care! One major reason that we started TRIZ Journal in 1996 was so that there would be a place to publish TRIZ research. Practioners and teachers of TRIZ benefit when they share their insights and innovations, whether they reach the level of “research” or not.
I think that TRIZ is following the pattern of evolution of being gradually absorbed into the supersystem — it is part of the whole system of company innovation. Other opinions?

I recall that Darrel Mann had a project to do research on Matrix, in 2002, because the Matrix of Altshuller is in many ways outdated. However I haven«t heard anything of the research thereafter, concerning Electrical, Electronics, SW or other branches. Is the project still alive and what are the results and when these are publicly available?

As described in the latest of our publications on our ongoing patent research (January issue of TRIZ Journal), the original (1973)Contradiction Matrix is now little better than random for most types of problem. We published a completely new technical Matrix in 2003 which performs rather better. We've also published a Business Matrix in 2004 with a second iteration in 2007, and the new Software Matrix officually arrived with the publication of the Systematic (Software) Innovation book in October 2008. We currently have over 20 full-time staff and are sponsoring a number of University-based PhD programmes around the world, so hopefully can legitimately claim that the research is still very much alive and kicking. There are lots of definitions of “research”. All one has to do is either read The TRIZ Journal or go to a conference with TRIZ speakers and you can easily see the applications aspects of research, meaning that TRIZ is being applied in more and more areas.
In terms of basic research, the Russian TRIZ Journal shows some of the more basic research into conceptual TRIZ modeling, etc. This work applies to probably only a few percent of applications, but this work is conceptually no different than basic science research in other areas that discover new chemical elements, discover the transistor, map the genome, etc. Any science (let's not forget that's what TRIZ is!) will benefit from this long term. Some of this science has shown up in various TRIZ software products as well.
